The Naming of The Beasts : Giveaway

  • Jul. 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 PM
cold kiss
There's only 14 days, 4 hours 14 mins and 14 seconds - whoo hoo - [as I write this] until The Cold Kiss of Death :: Spellcrackers.com book 2 :: is released. I'm so excited, it feels like I'm waiting for . . . Hallowe'en* which is a very significant date for Genny in The Cold Kiss of Death, although for her, All Hallows' Eve comes much too quickly and brings with it some terrifying and unwanted adversaries. Yep, Genny's life is full of dangerous surprises - like ghosts deciding to haunt her, vampires wanting her to paint the town red, and let's not mention the witches! So she really doesn't have an easy time of it in book 2 [although she didn't exactly have a great time in book 1 either *evil author cackle* LOL!] .

Now onto this week's celebratory giveaway to help get the word out.

'The Naming of the Beasts' :: Mike Carey [book 5 his Felix Castor series] comes out 2nd September [which isn't a minute too soon for me :-)] Mike Carey is right there at the top with my other favourite authors and I love the Felix Castor books. They have a fantastically different take on ghosts, zombies and were-beings [not to mention demons!] Felix a.k.a. Fix is a freelance exorcist and he is such an interesting character, one who grows and changes with each book as he comes to terms with his own inner demons. Add in really cracking stories, some wonderfully elegant plotting, and prose that begs to be read over and over** . . . Oh, and Fix's occasional partner is my all time favourite kick-ass demon, Juliet [Ajulutsikael] a succubus trying to go straight, or sort of anyway *grin* . . . and so coming to the end of a Felix Castor book makes you desperate to read the next one; or failing that, turn back and start from page 1 again.

Yep, you've guessed it, I'm a total fan-girl, but you don't have to take my word for how great the Felix Castor books are, check out this review of Thicker Than Water at Falcata Times  or this one at My Favourite Books. Then leave a comment here to enter the giveaway to win your choice out of the five Felix Castor books including The Naming of The Beasts*** along with a signed copy of The Cold Kiss of Death or The Sweet Scent of Blood.

BREAKING NEWS - Orbit have generously donated books 1 - 4 of Mike Carey's Felix Castor series for The Naming of The Beasts giveaway so there will now be two lucky winners. First winner chosen by Random.org gets their choice of either books 1-4 [Felix Castor] or their choice of one of the five Felix Castor books including The Naming of The Beasts*** along with a signed copy of The Cold Kiss of Death or The Sweet Scent of Blood. Whoo Hoo! Thank you to Orbit for their excellent extra prize!

Scariest demon from TV, film, or fiction? I'm going to have to go with the beastie that possessed little Regan in The Exorcist. Old-school, I know, but that movie (and the book) still gives me the creeps.

Yay, nearly there! Are you excited?;D

My favourite demon is Rule from Christine Warren's The Demon you know. He's very sexy and gives the usually evil and ugly demons a whole new image...

My favorite is Jim from the Ashling Grey novels. But the scariest is the one from The Exorcist, both the movie and the book.

demon contest
I don't really have a scariest demon, but my favorite demon to read about is Al from the Kim Harrison books. He's funny in a demonic way.

DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMONS
Hi

Dunno if he classifies as a Demon but he has Green Skin, Horns and Red Eyes. He is Lorne from the tv series Angel. Lorne was born as Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan in the demonic dimension of Pylea. Lorne, as he prefers to be called, wasn't like his fellow Deathwok clan demons, bloodthirsty "champions" constantly undertaking quests against evil. He is a gentle soul who does not share his kin's prejudice against humans (or "cows" as they are called in his world). Lorne would rather flirt with the female demons and enjoy life than train to be a fighter. He also enjoys beauty, art, and even music, which was difficult, considering his world had no music. Lorne refused to train his innate mystical senses to learn to hunt beasts and is considered the shame of his clan. In 1996, Lorne happened upon a dimensional portal and was sucked through it. He landed in Los Angeles and discovered music and culture like he never imagined. Lorne learned to hone his mystical senses to read people's auras, but found it easiest to do so when they sang, baring their souls. He opened up a karaoke bar on the same spot that he arrived on Earth, an old abandoned building. Lorne contracted the Transuding Furies to cast a sanctuary spell on the spot, which stopped any demon violence from occurring on it. He named the bar "Caritas," the Latin word for "mercy." Caritas became a success in the morally ambiguous Los Angeles underground scene. To most who visited the bar, Lorne was simply called "The Host." He later states he didn't use the name "Lorne" in this dimension, because his striking green skin prompted people to make Lorne Greene jokes (Balttestar Galactica and Bonanza anyone??????).

About a month after filming the last episode of Angel, Andy Hallet, the actor who played Lorne suffered a dental infection which spread through his bloodstream and to his heart, leading to a cardiomyopathy, for which he was hospitalised. Although he recovered, his heart muscle and valves were weakened and he found himself easily fatigued afterward. He did not return to acting (except for a voice part in the animated film Geppetto's Secret), but pursued his music career and frequently appeared at media conventions for Buffy and Angel and for science fiction and fantasy in general. Five years after his first heart problems, (and at least three additional hospitalisations), Andy died from congestive heart failure on March 29, 2009.
He was only 33.

Re: DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMONS
I love Lorne, but for some reason always forget he's a demon! Odd, I know :-)

And it was such a shame about Andy Hallet *sigh*

As a kid, I was totally creeped out by the Lord of Darkness from the movie, Legend. My favourite is Al from Kim Harrison's The Hollows series...though the goat eyes kinda creep me out too. LOL

I haven't seen it in ages either. All I remember is him being big, red, horned and voiced by Tim Curry. :D

Being disorganised as ever, I'm finally getting around to entering.
I think my favourite demon might be Lough, (sp?) from the Morgan Kingsley series, but I have to agree with the people who said Algaliarept. He's so much fun - I'd hoped we would see more of him in the most recent book, but it does look promising for the next one.
